Where is Chambamontera?
It is an isolated community in the Andes mountain range in Peru.
Why does Chambamontera need a sustainable energy scheme?
Most people are dependent on subsistence farming and small scale coffee farming so nearly half of the population live on just US$2 a day.
Development of the area has been restricted by lack of electricity for heat, light and power.
Due to the low population density it was uneconomic to build an electricity grid to serve the area.

What is the Chambamontera micro-hydro scheme?
The scheme was supported by the charity Practical Action.
The high rainfall, steep slopes and fast flowing rivers make this area ideal for exploiting water power as a renewable source of energy. The cost was $51000 which was partly funded by Japan but the community had to pay for part of it. The average cost per family was US$750 which they funded by credit. |
How has the scheme benefited the local community?
