Economic |
There is high unemployment due to the rescission in 2015. Unemployment in the favelas is 20%. The residents of favelas are mainly involved int he informal economy which is low paid and unreliable work. The government doesn't receive taxes from them and there is no unemployment benefit. |
Using education to reduce youth unemployment. They have set up 'Schools of Tomorrow' that offer flexible and practical education that prepares the youth with specific work related skills. (See video below the table) |

Only 55% of Rio has a local family health clinic, particularly in the west zone of the city. Only half of children continue their education beyond the age of 14. There is a big risk that they drop out of school and become involved in drug trafficking. 12% of Rio didn't have access to running water . There is a shortage of electricity so there are frequent blackouts Violent, gang based crime is a challenge in favelas. |
Medical staff took a health kit into people's homes in Santa Marta with materials to detect 20 different diseases and treat them. The government have given grants to poor families to help meet the cost of keeping their children in school, rather than sending them to work. 7 new treatment plants were built between 1998 and 2014 so that now 95% have access to mains water supply. They built the Simplicio hydro-electric complex to increase electricity supply by 30% which cost $2 billion. They set up Pacifying Police Units in 2013 to reclaim favelas from drug dealers. |
Environmental |
Traffic congestion is an issue as the number of Rio has grown by over 40% in the last 10 years. Because Rio is surrounded by mountains, there are limited roads because they can only be built on the coastal lowland. Guanabara bay is highly polluted which is a threat to wildlife. Over 200 tonnes of raw sewage pour into it each day. The steep slopes and small pathways in the favelas make it difficult to collect waste so it is often dumped which then can cause diseases like cholera to spread |
The metro system has been expanded to the South Zone. Main roads have become a toll roads to encourage the use of public transport instead of cars. 12 new sewage works have been built since 2004 A power plant has been built that extracts the methane from the rotting waste and makes electricity. |
