Why does Nigeria need aid? Many of Nigeria's population is poor and have limited access to basic services such as clean water. Over 60% live on less than US$1 a day.
Birth rates and infant mortality are high and life expectancy is low - particularly in the NE of the country. |
What is the impact of aid in Nigeria? The most successful projects are community based and are supported by the NGOs and small charities. This help is usually delivered to where help is needed most.
For example: The Aduwan Health Centre This community did not have a health care centre so it had a high instance of high infant mortality. ActionAid took funds to make a new health clinic in 2010 that immunises babies and tests for HIV. |
What prevents aid being used effectively?
Aid that has gone through the government has been less successful because there is a level of corruption in the Nigerian government so the funds have not been delivered to the communities that need it most. There have been some examples of the aid being used to build up Nigeria's navy.
