This section looks at:
- Global distribution of resources (as seen below)
- The provision of energy, water and food in the UK
- An in depth study of the provision of energy globally
The Global Distribution of Resources
KEY WORD CORNER
Resource
A resource is a stock or supply of something that has a value or a purpose. The three most important resources are food, water and energy
Undernutrition/malnutrition
A poorly balanced diet lacking in vitamins and minerals
Malnourished
When someone eats under the recommended 2000-2500 calories a day. 1 billion people globally are undernourished
Water Scarcity
When a country does not have access to a sufficient supply of water they are regarded as water scarce
The Energy Trade
When one country buys energy from another country. This energy then needs to be transported form the producing country to the consuming country. For example, Middle Eastern countries supply most of the oil that the UK uses.

Food
We can infer from undernourishment data about the availability of food in different centres. The places that have the greatest percentage of undernourishment is across central and southern Africa where there is a range between 25 and 35% of the population that are undernourished. The places with least undernourishment (under 5%) are in HICs in continents such as North America and Europe. |
Energy
The country with the largest energy consumption currently is the USA (22000 TWh), but shortly followed but China (30000 TWh). (Because the red and purple parts represent a collection of countries then it doesn't count when talking about the country with the largest energy consumption) The European Union and the USA's energy consumption have remained reasonably consistent over the 40 years plotted. The reason for this is because both areas are at a consistent level of development. The country with the most dramatic change is China around the year 2000 which demonstrates the economic changes taking place there. |
