Positive Impacts of Tourism
Negative Impacts of Tourism
There are 1.1 million cruise passengers visiting Jamaica each year but 2.5 million other tourists. Cruise tourists spend US$70 a day but other tourists spend US$120.
Tourism is the main source of employment in Jamaica. 200,000 are employed.
People who are employed in the tourist industry may learn new skills which can improve their prospects of a better paid job in the future.
New cruise-liner facilities have been built at the port at Trelawney.
Conservation and landscape projects provide job opportunities and encourage people to visit the island. E.g. Montego Bay
In areas of the island where tourists don’t do, there hasn’t been much improvement in the quality of roads and so those areas remain isolated
High numbers of people still live in poor quality housing with limited food supply and inadequate access to fresh water, health care and education.
The amount of tourists that Jamaica has can create excessive waste and harmful emissions
